“I love skateboarding and have been to many Maverick skateparks and I’m so pleased that my favourite one is in my own village. Thank you Maverick.”

SETH ROBERTS

Stoke-sub-Hamdon Skatepark Project

When we started this project, we knew that we needed professional help to enable us to get from an initial idea to a successful conclusion. We had carried out surveys in the village to better understand what skateboarders wanted, and we put this into a tender asking for someone to partner us through the planning and fundraising stages, prior to construction.

Maverick won this competition and they proved to be an excellent partner helping us throughout these early pre-contract stages, advising us on planning issues and fundraising. Most importantly, as someone who had been down this path many times before, their positive approach to the project helped us to keep a confident and positive attitude – especially during the complicated and frequently disappointing times of fundraising. Their message was always that they help us make this project successful and they would build our skateboard park. And that is exactly what happened.

Once the contract was in place for construction, Maverick worked closely with the project team to ensure that access to the site caused the minimum of disruption to the neighbours – and that preparation paid off. The site manager and his team were very positive and reassuring from the outset and gave us confidence that everything would be under control - and it was. The project progressed smoothly from start to finish and completed in six weeks. The attention to detail and high quality of the finished product is a testament to the professionalism, work ethic, and commitment of the whole team at Maverick.

We have a wonderful skateboard park, as an integral part of our Adventure Play and Recreation Area, in a most beautiful setting. It is there for use by all ages and skill levels, and has been really well used from 20 minutes after the formal handover.

We cannot thank Maverick enough for doing exactly what they said at the outset – of helping us to make our idea become reality. Thank you from Stoke-sub-Hamdon.”

“A very busy project for us came to a fantastic conclusion with the skateboard jam. The whole event was inclusive and huge fun, and there was a good audience of all ages enjoying the spectacle – and the burgers, ice cream, and drinks. Everyone had a wonderful time – a fitting end to the project and to the start of a wonderful facility for people of all ages in this village.

Thank you, guys, so much for giving this village such a wonderful skateboard park, and helping us to complete our vision of a recreation and play area for everyone. Most importantly the skateboarders, bikers and scooter riders love it.”

THE DESIGN

The Stoke Sub Hamdon transition park is an open-sided flowpark style design, featuring hips, rollers and a spine/miniramp setup. Riders can carve around the facility using the hips and rollers in an unbroken flowline.  The facility features long sections of coping for grinds and lip tricks.  This style of facility would provide endless hours of fun, even for the most experienced of riders. The hips and rollers connect with the spine section and the miniramp seamlessly, allowing for some exciting transfer manoeuvres between the different spaces.

The miniramp is the bedrock of many of the most successful skateparks and enables riders to perform technical lip tricks and aerial maneuvers.  This section of the facility is clearly very important to local riders and was a core element in the consultation. The spine section can be sessioned back-to-back and the quarterpipe extension after the outer roller enables riders to soak up speed from tricks and create more momentum for a return run.
