We are working with Chipping Norton Town Council to design and build a new Skatepark on the New Street Recreation Area. We are asking local riders to help shape the designs by completing this short survey on what’s important to you in a skatepark.

We hope you like our conceptual ideas. Please feel free to answer the questions below and provide some feedback on the design.

THE SITE

We have taken account of the informal footpath which runs in between the facility and the existing play area, connecting to the gateway heading West.  This facility also makes use of grass bunding to integrate with the existing landscape where some level differences occur.  The proposed bunding will rise and fall with the slopes in the facility improving the aesthetic and removing the need for handrails.   Our proposed design maximises the use of the available space, taking account of the topography of the site and the existing features within it.

THE DESIGN

The facility comprises three zones; The Hipped Miniramps, The Box/Driveway Combo & The Ledge Setup .  All routes around the skatepark are designed to link up when the facility is quiet, conversely, they can be used as separate, independent areas when the park is busy.  Subtly segregating the space into different zones will enable larger numbers of people to use the space at the same time, safely.

This facility has not been diluted in terms of features, flowlines and rolling space.  Both spaces will provide challenges for all levels of riders, including those who are keen to attempt more technically difficult tricks on the elements within the design.  In our experience, local riders will quickly progress to a level where they can enjoy the whole space.  We would not recommend designing a facility that runs the risk of becoming dull or unchallenging over time.  This concept provides superfun hybrid style facility with a healthy mix of transition and street.

THE HIPPED MINIRAMPS

This design has been inspired by the information provided during the tender process and our recent site visit.  We have created a multi-level hipped miniramp that drops down through a waterfall, following the levels in the land.  These miniramps provide a superfun, inter-connected space, accessible to all.  Miniramps form the backbone of some of the most successful facilities throughout the UK.

The opposing coping sections allow for long grinds and lip tricks back and forth.  The 90 degree bowled corners in the mini allow riders to generate speed and flow through the corners.  The two offset hips enable riders to transfer in and out of the mini, performing aerials maneuvers.  There is a range of different heights on offer so that less experienced riders have the opportunity of learning on some lower-level quarter pipes before challenging themselves on the larger elements.  Halfpipes aka Miniramps and bowls were all commonly requested features from the consultation.

THE BOX / DRIVEWAY COMBO

Located in the lower half of the space is a dynamic jumpbox and driveway setup.  Riders can session this part of the facility back and forth using the two opposing ramps.  The large 1800mm quarterpipe (item 10) provides the perfect entry into the box.  The jumpbox flows well in both directions and is perfect for aerial manoeuvres and technical tricks.  The large 1800mm quarter return allows riders to soak up speed generated from the box.  The sidewall of the jumpbox drops down in height to form a superwide driveway and hubba ledge that works in both directions whether you're goofy or regular.  Riders can use the driveway as access to session the jumpbox in a run or hit the banks and grind down the hubba.  There is an additional roll on ledge to provide a more technical feature over the banks.

THE LEDGE SETUP

At the entrance to the facility the platform opens out into a spacious triangular street area.  A large grindledge planter dominates this space.  This open area is perfect for street skaters who want to perform technical tricks on the ledge or use it as a more challenging manual pad.  Riders can session this street feature in both directions and use the remaining negative space as a 'Game of Skate' area.

There is a curved ledge at the back of the mini that also doubles up as a secondary ledge.
